Survey says colleges aren’t preparing graduates for jobs
Are colleges adequately preparing graduates to enter the workforce? Why are so many college graduates unemployed? Is online education as effective as traditional in-person classes?
A new survey from Northeastern University attempts to answer those questions and more.
College graduates not ready for a career
The study revealed that nearly two-thirds of Americans believe the higher education system is doing only a fair or poor job of preparing graduates for the workforce.
And 87% of the public thinks the system needs to change in order for the U.S. workforce to remain competitive with other nations.
Importance of career preparation
To address the issue of graduates being unprepared to enter the workforce, Americans are in favor of integrating education programs with practical experience, such as internships, with 79% respondents saying it is “extremely important” or “very important” for colleges to focus on this area.
As parents and students demand more career preparation be integrated into their college experience, we hope to see colleges working with employers to establish internships that allow students to get paid, earn college credits, or both, while gaining the practical experience necessary to find a job and succeed.
Americans support expanding online education
The survey also addressed topics relating to technology and newer forms of higher education, such as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Most respondents were generally in favor of expanding educational options, with 84% saying it is at least somewhat important for colleges and universities to incorporate more online classes to provide greater flexibility and access for students. And 56% believe MOOCs will fundamentally transform the way students are educated in the U.S.
As more colleges start accepting work experience for college credit and expanding their online course options, students will have the opportunity to reduce their overall college costs while gaining valuable real-world experience. This will aid students in their career development and prepare them for career success.
