SUNY colleges offer a great value in public education
Looking for an affordable college? Check out some of the schools in the State University of New York (SUNY) system.
Even if you don’t live in New York state, these colleges offer a great value for your tuition dollar.
New York’s public colleges a great bang for your buck
In fact, nine SUNY schools made Kiplinger’s 2014 list of “Top 100 Best Values in Public Colleges.”
Binghamton University (15th) and SUNY Geneseo (20th) ranked the highest out of all SUNY schools. The survey considered admission and retention rates, student-faculty ratios, four- and six-year graduation rates, cost and financial aid to rank the colleges’ quality and affordability.
These rankings come in spite of the expected rise in SUNY tuition for next year. Even though costs are on the rise, these colleges still rank among the best in public education value.
A good deal for out-of-state students
SUNY Geneseo and SUNY Binghamton also ranked in the top five nationally for best value for out-of-staters, with Geneseo placing third and Binghamton fourth. Geneseo is one of only two colleges in the survey that cost less than $30,000 a year for out-of-staters.
Other SUNY schools in the top 100 for in-state value included Stony Brook University (29); SUNY New Paltz (49); University at Buffalo (51); SUNY Oneonta (74); SUNY Purchase (89); SUNY Fredonia (97); and SUNY Plattsburgh (98).
The best public colleges for your money
For both in-state and out-of-state students, the University of North Carolina topped the list for the public college with the best value.

Finding affordable colleges
While many public colleges offer a great value, don’t dismiss private colleges for their high sticker prices. Many private universities have larger endowments and offer more financial aid and merit scholarships than state-supported schools.
